MHG and the Mental Health Mission: how they fit together

Launched in May 2023, the Mental Health Mission committed £42.7 million to clinical research centres across the UK, delivered through the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration — a network of investigators specialising in mental health research, chaired by Professor Rachel Upthegrove with Professor Jeremy Hall as deputy chair.
What the Mission does
More than £20 million established two demonstrator sites: the Mental Health Research for Innovation Centre in Liverpool, which works on how mental, physical and social conditions interlink, and the Mental Health Mission Midlands Translational Centre in Birmingham, which supports research into novel treatments for early intervention in psychosis, depression, and children and young people. The Mission also runs a network of 15 mood-disorder research clinics, sited in areas of the UK with the highest levels of depression, for people with difficult-to-treat depression.
Two remits, designed to complement
The Mental Health Goals Programme (MHG) has a different remit within the same family of investments: a UK-wide front door for industry, trials design and methodology, a new partnership between patients and industry, and cohort and data infrastructure.
